Samsung Galaxy S22 vs. Apple iPhone 13 – Flagship Base Models Compared

Comparing Base Models of the Flagship Devices – Galaxy S22 vs. iPhone 13

Comparing devices of Samsung and Apple have been one of our core responsibilities on this platform. Today is another comparison day as we talk about the likes of Galaxy S22 and the iPhone 13.

The two products have a lot in common as they came with little or no changes from their predecessors. The upgrades in both devices are worth talking about and we believe that it is going to be an exciting contest.

The processor has been improved in the Apple iPhone 13 and the battery life has also seen a significant improvement.

The processor is backed by a neural engine and the Galaxy S22 is coming with improved cameras and one of the best mobile displays on the market. If you’re looking to grab a brand-new phone in 2022, you need to choose between these two and this article will help you do that by taking into account all the intricate details of these devices.

Value & Price:

The iPhone 13 is being offered at almost $800 and comes with a 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. Spending a $100 extra will give you an upgrade to 256 GB and another $100 will give you 512 GB. People that are looking to capture a lot of videos and pictures will have to go for the upgrade. The camera upgrade is also quite good in the iPhone 13 and it has to be one of the best cameras going around.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S22 is coming at just under $800 and packs an 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage. You can double your storage by spending another $50 as it will help you play loads of games and take loads of photos.

These two devices are not affordable for everyone but lots of people will take the deal at $799. The Galaxy S22 is also coming with a superior triple-camera array and hits almost 120 Hz display. In this category, we believe that it’s a draw between the two devices.

Design:

The designs of these two devices are almost identical to their predecessors, however; they are still quite compact and strong.  The iPhone 13 is coming with additional two-color options such as Blue and Pink. The notch has also been down by 20% and the camera lenses have been switched to a diagonal position.

The Galaxy S22 is back with a Contour Cut Camera housing and the design is almost similar to its predecessor. It is now color-matched to the phone and it also extends the display from 6.1 to 6.2-inch. It’s a fantastic decision by Samsung and we think that this decision will surely make the Samsung users happier.

Both of these phones are coming with IP68 water and dust resistance and the screen protection is comparable as well. The iPhone 13 is offering a ceramic shield and the Galaxy S22 is packing a Gorilla Glass Victus. Both panels are good surviving against small hiccups and accidents.

If we talk about the overall weight then the Galaxy S22 weighs around 5.9 ounces compared to iPhone 13’s 6 ounces. The bezels of S22 are a bit round-shaped and that is why, the Galaxy looks bigger than the iPhone 13. We will cast our vote for the Galaxy S22 as far as the overall design is concerned.

Display:

Here comes one of the most important aspects, the display. The Galaxy S22 is offering a nice 6.1-inch FHD+ display with 2340 x 1080-pixels and a dynamic AMOLED 2x display and a stimulating 120 Hz refresh rate.

At the same time, the iPhone 13 is coming with the same-sized display but comes with a Super Retina XDR 2532 x 1170-pixel, OLED display.

The refresh rate in the iPhone 13 is 60 Hz, however; it comes with much sharper display with close to 460 pixels per inch. The Galaxy S22 packs 422 PPI and both of these phones are quite stunning in their overall looks and display.

Overall, we have seen that the Samsung Galaxy S22 has been delivering more of the DCI-P3 color gamut at almost 80%. In Samsung’s vivid mode, this number can go up to 150%.

Also, 795 nits of brightness in the iPhone 13 sounds impressive but the Galaxy S22 offers a maximum brightness rate of 1191 nits. The display of iPhone 13 is great but as we all know; this is Samsung’s forte and they cannot be beaten in this category.

Performance:

So far, the Galaxy S22 has dominated in all the categories and this is perhaps a bit disrespectful for Apple and the iPhone 13. As far as the performance is concerned, the iPhone 13 comes with an A15 Bionic chip and Samsung Galaxy S22 is only having a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC.

It is like comparing a professional athlete with a rising star of a school or a college. The performance of these two chips is going to be enough and can afford a number of apps to run on your phone.

If you try a couple of 120 Hz games on the Galaxy S22 then it performs equally good to be honest.

However, you will enjoy a bit more details in the iPhone 13. The performance of both devices is satisfactory, however; as far as the display is concerned, we’re going to give our vote to the iPhone 13 as you expect a lot of longevity from this device and it will utilize the resources pretty well.

Battery life:

Technically, the Galaxy S22 is winning this category as it comes with a large 3700 mAh battery compared to iPhone’s 3227 mAh. In the battery tests conducted, the iPhone 13 was going through all the sample works such as browsing and other stuff for almost 10 hours and 30 minutes.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S22 went around for almost 8 hours and 20 minutes. You simply can’t ignore the difference of close to two hours, therefore, we’d say that the iPhone 13 is winning this category.

The Galaxy S22 is offering 25W charging and the Apple iPhone is giving you a paltry 20W of charging. The charging speed is a bit faster in the iPhone 13 because of its smaller battery. Wireless charging is also supported by both devices with Qi compatibility and we are certain that the iPhone 13 wins this category with a better and decisive battery life victory.

Camera quality:

Samsung S22 is offering three rear cameras and the iPhone 13 is packing two. As far as the iPhone 13’s cameras are concerned, it has not made a lot of changes from its previous models. It still comes with a splendid f/1.6 primary lens at 12MP and a normal f/2.4 ultra-wide at 12 Mega Pixels.

This year, the iPhone 13 is having a large pixel as it brings in a lot of light. Therefore, it becomes really difficult to compete with iPhone’s ability to capture great results in low light conditions because of its primary lens.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S22 has made a lot of changes to its overall camera quality. The primary wide angle is now coming at a 50MP sensor at f/1.8 and also uses a ‘tetra binning’.

The ultra-wide camera is still 12 MP and comes across a little better at f/2.2 compared to the iPhone. It also packs a nice optical 3x zoom instead of a hybrid zoom as it allows the final result to appear sharper.

Results in daylight are good enough on both phones and it also depends on the photographic styles of the customer. Some people would chalk out amazing results on S22 while others won’t on iPhone 13 despite having better features.

Software:

Let’s just clear one thing. This is not about Android vs. iOS. Both of these operating systems have their own flaws and advantages. They both offer new features every now and then.

Android has made huge strides in the past couple of years as far as FaceTime or Fingerprint IDs are concerned. Samsung is definitely among the best in this case because it comes with Android updates with four years of major OS and security updates in as many years.

Only Google has a better standard as it comes with five years of security updates. The Pixel will tap out after three years of major OS updates. The iPhone 13 will stay the same with almost six years of software and security updates. This whole discussion regarding the software is useless because people tend to change their phones after a hefty break of three or four years. We will give the award to the iPhone 13 because it has a powerful software support system and the processor is overwhelmingly good as well.

Conclusion:

It is extremely difficult for us to choose between these two. However, we’d say that the first few categories went to the Samsung Galaxy S22 and after that, the iPhone 13 has made a great comeback.

The battle was quite close in most of the categories, however; as far as the battery life and performance is concerned, the iPhone 13 has won it with a major difference. The Galaxy S22 comes with a stunning display and a beautiful 120 Hz refresh rate.

On the other hand, the overall performance and battery life of the iPhone 13 is quite commendable. The battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S22 is not bad but it can’t touch the level of iPhone 13. The overall build quality is also stronger in the iPhone 13 and its Bionic A15 SoC chip is a winner itself.
