The general agreement is that Microsoft’s initial attempts to get Windows working on both desktops and tablets were a bit of a mess. Now, a few years down the line, the project has a happy ending: a range of powerful 2-in-1 laptop / tablet Windows devices.

The Surface Pro might be the benchmark, but a lot of other PC manufacturers are also trying their luck, including HP(Hewlett-Packard). Here’s the new HP Elite x2 2-in-1 officially called HP Elite x2 1013 G3, the latest incarnation of the machine that’s on sale now.

As a 2-in-1s go, this is a premium-level one: that’s expressed in the specifications, in the model, and, yes, in just the fact that HP has made it. It’s a laptop / tablet designed to attract business travellers more than students or homeworkers, but it still has a widespread appeal.

The attractiveness may be constrained a little by how much you’re going to have to spend in order to get one, with prices starting north of £ 1,600 and going up from this point. It’s going to cost you a bit of money, but would it be worth it?

HP has been manufacturing PCs for a number of years now, and the newest iteration of HP Elite x2 crosses all the boxes in terms of aesthetics: it’s sleek, it’s understated, and it’s a very good mix of gray, black and silver. With a thickness of 13.2 mm (0.52 inches) and a weight of 1.18 kg (2.6 lbs), it’s perfect to slip into a backpack or briefcase and carry with you wherever you go.

It is found it to be a joy (as well as easy to attach and remove, of course) to type in a removable keyboard, which acts as a cover for the computer-much better than, the official Apple Keyboard fits with the iPad Pro.

A kickstand is right at the back of the tablet itself, used in laptop mode and helped by movies when you watch. For the screen, the corner is 13 inches and the resolution of 3,000 x 2,000 pixels is very respectable.

The bezels are fairly chunky, but this is good and helps when using the HP Elite x2 in Tablet mode. The bezels are very wide. Colours are clean and light, details are precise, and the machine scores a lot whether you type an essay or watch movies (Netflix really looks good for example on this device).

With the use of the HP Elite x2, we have no reservations about design and build performance, as they are right in position to compete against Microsoft and Apple. There are at least a few of them: three USB C ports, a memory-card reader and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. We’re not persuaded 100% by the slightly recessed ports around our sides.

The version considered here is fitted with a 8th-gang Intel Core i7-8650 U 1.90GHz cpu, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD memory. It can also be programmed in a variety of configurations. Intel’s UHD 620 chip is used for graphics. These are excellent specs for such a lightweight 2-in-1 machine, of course the price reflects it.

HP Elite x2 is actually considered great for all the tasks tested on it, but when you have some large pictures or a video opened it starts with a bit of chug. So long as you are away from jobs for which you should really use a computer or high-tech laptop, such as top-level gaming or video editing, this tablet / laptop should fit well.

Even though when someone just browse the website and check e-mail, the device’s back seemed very heated, but it is a usual inconvenience with 2 in 1, because they don’t have room to fit into a robust cooling system. The final thought is that HP Elite x2 can book a place in zipper for everyday tasks – and will do it over the next few years.

HP claims you can get 10 hours life of the battery when you watch the video, but in reality it is a bit less, in the region of 8-9 hours between charges.

If you’re going to be away for the whole day from the workplace (or your home office), then the HP Elite x2 should last you until you can get back, but not much more.

You can’t grab anything much better than HP Elite x2 in many ways, if you are determined that the 2-in-1 Windows form factor is for you then engineering, building performance and data quality are especially tough to beat with anything that Microsoft or anyone else does at the moment.

It is indeed a great pleasure to use and can take care of many computer tasks without a problem for you (perhaps just unnecessary heat).

Windows has become a perfect place to use in tablets, whether you watch the video streaming during your holiday, or try to take handwritten notes while working (we should remember that the HP Elite x2 supports a stylus but this is an extra optional).

It’s not as smart as Apple does with iPadOS, but it’s flexible. On the other hand, battery life is not great and you’ll need a handsome amount of money and these are two reasons why you could settle on one of the many other 2-in-1s on the market.

Something like the HP Envy sequence could be more fitting if your needs are simpler. The business consumers are most attracted by the money they spend and it provides all of the necessary qualities. It is genuinely built, solid to use, and is easy to switch between tablet and laptop modes. There are many other great 2-in-1s and standard laptops also available, particularly for any user.
