Intel recently introduced new W-2200 Cascade Lake-X Xeon processors. These processors are probably ideal for the new iMac Pro if Apple is looking to upgrade the device in the near future.

For now, Apple is using modified Intel Xeon-W processors for its iMac Pro models and could use either a reserve variant of the W-2200 Xeon chips or a custom edition.

It has up to 18 AVX 512 allowed cores in the latest W-2200 chips, along with up to 48 PCIe lanes, Turbo Boost Max 3.0, and AI acceleration (Intel Deep Learning Boost) for visual effects, motion graphics, 3D rendering, and more.

Chips are identical to Intel’s X-Series chips but with Intel vPro support for up to 1 TB ECC RAM, VROC, and RAS (reliability, availability, and serviceability) features. As per Intel, the new chips deliver 2x faster 3D architecture processing, 97 percent faster 4K video editing, and 2.1x faster video game compilation times.

Intel is launching a new, more reasonable pricing structure for revamped processors, lowering prices by almost 50 percent compared to the previous generation of Xeon chips. Price cuts could lower the cost of potential iMac Pro models if Apple were to pass those savings on to customers.

Apple launched the iMac Pro in 2017 and still hasn’t revised it since then, so it’s due to be updated. There’s no word that an updated model is running, but we often don’t hear much about minor Mac refreshes, so new processors and other hardware might still arrive in a 2019 update.
