The HP Elite DragonFly is a business computer and as soon as specialists see it, they can’t help but step forward to test its services and features. There are two main elements of a good laptop. The professionally built business laptops are only made to get the jobs done on time whilst the other shiny consumer products play a key role in attracting youngsters and non-professional users. However, what would you say if a laptop carries both of these qualities?

The HP Elite Dragon Fly is certainly suitable to be used for professional/office work whilst it also has the abilities to excite the young boys and girls with its astounding design along with plenty of ports.

The HP Elite Dragonfly is a very slim and small laptop with a beautiful 2-in-1 design. Be ready to spend around $1,629 (£ 1,618, AU$2,770) or more because the Dragonfly is certainly not cheap at all. The HP laptops are generally expensive but this one certainly gives you the value for money.

It is also expensive because this particular laptop is designed for professionals who are traveling more often. That’s why its price has been kept a little more expensive than usual HP laptops. The LTE functionality is what makes this laptop invaluable for traveling professionals.

We feel that the feature ‘online anywhere’ is absolutely breathtaking in this Dragonfly, however, some of the problems with drivers had interrupted us from enjoying a smooth and undisturbed experience.

It is a dream come true kind of laptop for every professional who is entitled to travel every now and then. The lightweight design, always-connected LTE coverage, and quick internals make Elite Dragonfly one of the best laptops out there if you’re constantly traveling.

Price and availability

For starters, the HP Elite Dragonfly is being sold at $1,629 (£1,618, AU$2,770). So you’d get an Intel Core i5 U-Series 8th-generation with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD at the same price. However, the SSD gets doubled in the UK entry configuration.

So people might start to think that they can get a lot better hardware at the same price but when you see the 2-in-1 design and the LTE, then Dragonfly starts making sense as well. If you think that’s still not enough for you to make your jobs easier, the Dragonfly can also be upgraded with more hardware.

It strangely ends with an SSD of 256GB but on the brighter side, it will give you an 8th-generation Core i7 processor along with 16GB RAM.

These are just the starting features; you can get a lot more in the United States and create your own configuration with a lot more memory and better viewing experience as well. When you top it out with an Intel Core i7 CPU, a 4K display, and a 2 TB SSD, the cost is $3,258 higher.

The Dragonfly is being sold at almost the same prices in both Australia and the United Kingdom. In the UK, you’d get a 1TB SSD with a 4K display at the price of £1950. However, the Aussies will get the same setup in AU$4210.

Design

There’s a little text written under the keypad i.e. ‘Elitebook’. Now you know why we kept on calling it a laptop made for the professionally working people?

If we can put it in simple words then we’d say that this HP Elite Dragonfly is a complete winner. It’s coming in a classy Iridescent Dragonfly Blue color which is absolutely fantastic in design. It’s extremely light due to the magnesium frame.

The Dragonfly comes in at just 2.2 lb (0.99 kg) to get off, but if you go for the optional bigger battery it will be a bit larger.

The Dragonfly comes with a small footprint that is around 11.98 inches wide and 0.63 inches thick. With small bezels, HP has pulled this off and the result is 86% screen to body ratio. We definitely saw thinner bezels out there but this is a 2-in-1 laptop, so we’re impressed with it.

The oleophobic coating means your computer is going to look neat and clean even after dropping stains or fingerprints on its frame. There is no need to bring chemicals into play for just a simple cleaning purpose.

Since it is a laptop for a professionally working lot so the ports are also pretty important. You get an HDMI on the right side of the laptop whilst there are a 3.5mm audio and two Thunderbolt 3 ports and you can use all of them for charging as well.

A single USB 3.1 Type-A port, the power button and a Nano-SIM slot can be located over the bottom. The Dragonfly can be taken in a 1000 nit 1080p display with a sure view or you can also get a 550 nit 4K display. We believe that both of them are going to look fantastic.

As far as the the HP model with 1080p monitor at 400 nits, it’s not as nice as the other display choices. It is certainly bright and colorful enough to keep up with Photoshop show floor requirements. HP wins the race in the speakers department as well when it comes to Windows compatible laptops.

Rather than tucking them under the laptop to fire sound impotently into the table, they instead project sound upwards. There’s very little chance of people going to buy the Elite Dragonfly for jamming out to their music.

The Dragonfly isn’t just for boring work hours. You will definitely crave for some music or entertainment in your free hours and the Elite Dragonfly won’t disappoint you in that department as well. The keyboard is also magnificent and it is going to help you a lot in your typing sessions.

The biggest advantage of the keyboard is that it doesn’t make any disturbing sounds. It almost gives you the feeling of typing on a cloud. You won’t hear any sounds even if you keep using is for professional typing activities.

Performance

You won’t get the fastest Ultrabook but it is also not far behind either because the HP Elite Dragonfly is coming with an 8th-generation Whiskey Lake Processor with vPro.

We strongly believe that the amount of improvement in generation to generation with Intel’s processors is not serious at all. However, at the same time, we also believe that this laptop is fast enough for everything that you want to do on it.

For such a compatible and portable laptop, getting 1059 points in Cinebench R20 was a serious achievement. What’s more impressive is that the Dragonfly actually out-performs lots of gaming laptops in the single-core Geekbench4 test.

The HP Elite Dragonfly gives a sense of satisfaction when we see its score of 5266 points in comparison to Alienware M15’s 4995.

It is obviously not a massive difference but still, HP had impressed us with its striking nature. You don’t have to worry even in events like CES because the Dragonfly is quick enough to keep up with our manic chrome tab habits. Thanks to its 16GB of RAM.

Can you imagine around 100 tabs opened at the same time and the laptop keeps on working without lagging? Well, the HP Elite Dragonfly is capable of doing it.

The only thing that can reduce its speed is when you try to load a video game on it. However, we won’t recommend doing it because it is not made for games at all. In our normal routine work, it doesn’t matter how many things you have opened up since the Dragonfly doesn’t stop or slow down at all.

Battery life

This laptop can survive throughout the day with half-battery and such a performance definitely deserves accolades. Make notes, bang out important news stories and take it out of your backpack a lot of times again and again. If any laptop in this world can survive through this kind of stuff mentioned then it’s a definite winner.

As far as the battery tests are concerned then it last for about 8 hours while playing 1080 video in one test and the other test showed 4 hours and 42 minutes of battery. Still, great numbers aren’t they?

Software and features

The security of this laptop is at another level because the Dragonfly is specifically made for professionals who are meant to serve in the IT sector.

You don’t have to worry about your data at all because even if your computer is compromised, the boot sector is protected by HP Sure Start. Due to that, you won’t face any problems in recovering your data.

The hacker can delete the BIOS but this function will also overwrite whatever the attacker tries to do. Another great feature ‘HP calling the camera’ is here as well. This is a Private HP camera as known by the HP which means there is a shutter that covers the lens of the camera so even if someone breaks into your room, they still can’t gain access to your camera without you removing the shutter with hands.

You will also be able to protect your screen from anyone looking over your shoulder and trying to read what you are working on if you get a model with HP Sure View.

Security of your data and your computer is very important these days especially when you’re working daily and entering new records daily. We are glad that HP does it beautifully and it won’t disappoint you.

Since it’s a laptop especially made for professionals then you always expect its price to be very high. So if you’re low on budget and can’t afford a premium level laptop then you shouldn’t be going for this Elite Dragonfly by HP.

If you’re looking to do tasks such as video editing or any other creative work then it can prove costly for you because the HP Elite Dragonfly is certainly not made for such kind of stuff.

If you’re looking to do something of that sort then it is better not to waste your money on something that can’t meet your choices. It can be used best for the daily routine tasks of the office.
