Samsung’s Galaxy Book S launched at New York’s Unpacked 2019 case, a surprising addition to the company’s Galaxy S10 and S10 + phablets widely anticipated launch. The surprise is the CPU inside, starting at $1,000, this is the incredibly-new, Octo-core 8cx Snapdragon from Qualcomm. This is not a small feat despite the need to replicate Windows 10 because QualComm had taken a few prior stabs to operate a Snapdragon laptop.

At best, the results so far have been mixed, losing maybe in terms of battery life for better performance. Nevertheless, the company claimed that it was designed from the ground up for laptops when Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8cx, late last year.

When we saw it on a reference laptop at Computex in Taipei, the 8cx later posted promising benchmarks. This is our first glimpse of a shipping unit’s latest CPU. This ultra portable Book line, powered by Snapdragon, is impressively thin and light.

The new Galaxy Book S is a full-on clam-shell, unlike the previous Galaxy Book 2, which was a 2-in-1 (keyboard tablet). It features a 13.3-inch full-HD touch screen, a bare minimum of ports, and up to 23 hours of battery life, according to Samsung.

Using one of the two USB Type-C ports on either side of the laptop, you can charge the 42-watt-hour battery of the Galaxy Book S. A 3.5 mm stereo audio jack is also available, while a flap covers a micro SD card slot.

In addition to its Snapdragon processor, the Galaxy Book S offers up to 1 TB of micro SD storage in 8 GB of RAM and either a 256 GB or 512 GB SSD. The Galaxy Book S was unsurprisingly slim and compact in hands measuring less than a half-inch thick and weighing just 2.2 pounds. During my extremely limited time with it, the complete version of Windows 10 running on the touch screen felt very snappy.

The Galaxy Book S is available in gray and bronze with a sleek, anodized aluminum build, with a hinge that slightly props up the keyboard when opening the cover. Gigabit LTE networking, a fingerprint reader, and AKG equipped stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos sound are also on board.

The battery life is widely known quality of this product and it literally can last for a few days as promised by the manufacturers.  Also, they are promising sliver-thin bodies, sliver-thin profiles and super-light weights. Performance can also be better than in previous generations. We hope to test the claims in the near future with the debut of the Galaxy Book S and maybe others.
